How Does Air Duct Cleaning Work?

Clean your air ducts, breathe better air

It’s springtime in Alaska, and if you’re like most of us, it’s time to throw open the windows and get some fresh air into your house! But what if even after all the windows have been open the air in your house still seems a bit stale? It might be time to have the air ducts cleaned.

Air duct cleaning can remove air pollutants, dust, mold, and other allergens from your pipes. It is advisable to do approximately every three years to keep your home air and furnace healthy. When looking for a professional air duct cleaner, it is vital to check to see that they have been certified by the National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA).

You might be wondering what air duct cleaning technicians will be doing once they get to your home. We’re glad you asked.

  • Step 1: A professional will check out your ducts to determine the extent of cleaning that is needed. They may need to drill some holes in your ductwork to do this, but don’t worry, they will leave everything as good as new. During this inspection, they will also look for any cracks or leaks that may cause issues during cleaning.
  • Step 2: Certified duct cleaners will use a powerful vacuum to remove what is cleaned from your ducts. This vacuum is usually large enough that it will be mounted in a van or truck. Alternatively, there is an option for a handheld vacuum that is considered effective.
  • Step 3: Brushes that are either manual or motorized will be inserted into the duct work in your home. The brushes clean the inside of the pipes, knocking dust and debris loose. As with step one, duct cleaners will need to cut access holes into your ductwork to be able to access all areas of the house. For the most part, the brushes are inserted through vents and intakes, but even with this access, all areas can’t be reached. Again, don’t worry, the cleaners will patch up your ductwork so that it is as good as new.
  • Step 4: The vacuums suck up all of the loose debris cleaned out of the pipes.
  • Step 5: Clean the heating/cooling unit.
  • Step 6: Seal everything back up and clean the vent covers

There might be times when the duct cleaners will need to be in your crawl space or attic to be able to access all of the pipes and vents so make sure you are prepared to give them access.

So if you are considering having your air ducts cleaned and enjoying our warm Alaskan spring, even more, make sure you call a local air duct cleaning professional to get the job done right.
