My Boiler Will Not Turn On in Anchorage. What Do I Do?

My Boiler Will Not Turn On in Anchorage. What Do I Do?

It’s -15 degrees in the heart of winter in Anchorage and your boiler will not turn on. In Anchorage, an unheated home means more than just a little cold and discomfort, it can quickly become a dangerous situation for you and your family. What can you do to bring back the heat? From gas to electrical issues, we’re going to talk about how to troubleshoot your boiler today. Take a look.

If your boiler will not turn on and you cannot troubleshoot it using the tips below, please go somewhere warm with a family member or friends and call a professional! We serve Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley at Moore Heating. Give us a call at (907) 561-1500.

1. Check Your Thermostat Settings

For starters, check your thermostat and make sure it is set to “heat,” not “cool” or “off.” If your thermostat is not set to “heat,” your boiler will not turn on and heat your house. You might feel like this is a silly mistake, but better for you to check and discover this mistake yourself than call in somebody else to find it for you (not to mention the service charge)!

2. Test Your Thermostat Settings

If your thermostat is set to “heat” but your boiler will not turn on, your thermostat may not be set to kick the boiler on unless your house is significantly colder than it has become. Try raising the temperature on your thermostat by 5 degrees and see if your boiler doesn’t turn on within a few minutes. If it doesn’t, your thermostat may be broken and you may need to call a professional.

3. Check Your Boiler Circuit Breaker

Now you may be thinking, “My boiler runs on gas, so I can skip this step!” But you would be wrong. Although your boiler does primarily run on gas, it still uses a little bit of electricity for your electric ignition system and blower motor. Your boiler may not turn on because its circuit breaker may have tripped. Check to see if it is in the “on” position. If it is not, flip it to “on.”

Note that your boiler may take several minutes to turn back on. If after an attempt the circuit breaker trips again, you may have a much larger electrical issue. Please call a qualified, electrical professional in Anchorage to assist you in this matter.

4. Check Your Gas Line Valve

Your boiler may not turn on because there is no gas flowing to it. If you know what a gas line valve is, check to make sure yours is turned in the “open” position, that is, parallel to the line rather than perpendicular. If you do not know what a gas line valve is, we recommend that you save this step for a professional. You could have a dangerous gas leak on your hands if you turn the wrong component.

5. Call a Boiler Professional

If you have tried all of these tips and you still don’t know why your boiler will not turn on, please call a professional heating company. The issue may be caused by anything from a faulty electric ignition system to a malfunctioning temperature probe. Once you are dealing with the components of the boiler and not simple fixes like a thermostat issue, professional help is your best bet.
